Compress Image to 50 KB
Compress a photo to under 50 KB - a frequent requirement for government exam forms, signature uploads, and some older job portals.
The algorithm
50 KB is a middle-ground target: small enough for strict portals, large enough to keep decent image detail. The tool typically converges in 3-5 attempts, settling on a JPEG quality around 50-70% without needing to downscale.
Good target for scanned signatures, cropped passport photos, and ID card photos. For full-size photographs, the result will visibly compress but remain usable.
A real use case
Common use: SSC and UPSC exam forms require photos (typically 20-50 KB) and signatures (10-20 KB). This tool nails the 50 KB photo requirement cleanly. Also used for driving licence applications in some Indian states.
Common questions
Can I compress a selfie to 50 KB?
Yes - the tool will handle a modern phone selfie (2-5 MB) down to 50 KB. The face will remain clearly visible, though the background may show compression artifacts.
Does the aspect ratio stay the same?
Yes. The tool only changes quality and, if needed, resolution. It never crops or changes aspect ratio.
Is this really private?
Yes. Compression runs entirely in your browser using Canvas APIs. The image is never uploaded or stored. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
What image formats are accepted?
JPG, PNG, WebP, and GIF (first frame only). Output is always JPEG - it gives the best size-to-quality ratio for photos and screenshots at these target sizes.
What's the maximum file size I can upload?
Up to 50 MB. Modern phone photos are typically 2-8 MB, so even a RAW-converted image or a 4K screenshot fits comfortably.
Why does my file land slightly under the target instead of exactly on it?
The tool binary-searches JPEG quality to find the highest setting that still fits under the target. It stops at the first setting that lands under - which is exactly what upload portals want.
